OtherWorld, an initiative from forward-thinking start up Like No Other, is a next generation news experiment currently piloting in Manchester. OtherWorld uses cutting-edge beacon technology to create location-based storytelling experiences, helping people to explore their surroundings like never before. Described as ‘living media’, the service invites on-the-go public to access local news, alerts and history information before anyone else, without the pet hates of clickbait and adverts. Made possible through funding from Google’s Digital News Initiative (DNI), the location-based bluetooth service looks to move nationwide following initial successes. Take a look at their short promo below.

The service is a highly agile and contextual type of story, built for mobile to engage a new generation of people in local news and the community. Now on trial in Manchester, the service has quickly been backed by some fantastic partners across the city, including HOME, the National Football Museum, MIF, NHS, Fred Aldous and Transport For Greater Manchester. This first trial will be running until the end of the year, and we highly recommend.
