Manchester six-piece The Travelling Band have announced a new single, Sundial to be released through the Sideways Saloon imprint on the 26th of April.
Sundial, the first single to be released from their forthcoming (as yet untitled) second album demonstrates a massive leap forward for The Travelling Band. Dispensing with the need for a verse, Sundial instead centres around a glorious refrain which circles around for four short minutes, swelling as it does to include strings, horns, harmonies and a gleeful euphoria. Sundial isn’t quite soul music, isn’t quite folk, isn’t quite pop or rock, but is, unremittingly beautiful. If the summer festival in 2010 needs an anthem, maybe just maybe, this could be it…
The Travelling Band recently featured on the soundtrack to the Ian Dury biopic Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll (the only band other than The Blockheads to do so…), subsequently finding a fan in director Mat Whitecross and leading to him directing the video for Sundial. Another coo for a band whose fans now include the likes of Michael Eavis (“The Travelling Band take me back to my musical roots. Marvellous music to savour and enjoy”), Rolf Harris, Mani (“ future Manc classics!”) and Marc Riley (“if you consider the term Mancunian Americana to be an oxymoron try listening to the Travelling Band. Brilliant”)
