I know you’ll have been too busy trying (and failing) to uphold your self-restraining resolutions to notice the absence of this column in the past fortnight, but now is the time to break away from any ‘Dry January’ shackles and experience the city once more.
There are fair a few promoter birthdays around in Manchester over the coming weeks, which will surely temper with your temperance. First up is Sound Control’s 4th birthday, featuring Liam Frost as the headliner and recently reformed Bonebox in support. That one’s tonight, so better get that RSVP in ASAP.
Two more acoustic offerings will follow on Tuesday 21st and Thursday 23rd. The former is in the more intimate surrounds of The Castle Hotel: American Corey Chisel is the performer, brought to Manchester’s shores by the ever-reliable Jackdaw Social promoters. The latter is another American, Adam Green, bringing his experience as half of The Moldy Peaches into a solo tour, calling at Deaf Institute.
Sandwiched between those on Wednesday 22nd, Artful Dodger is offering the chance to re-e-wind back to the 90s. But will the Ritz crowd say bo selecta?
There are rich pickings on Friday 24th in both live and club backdrops. Of the earlier evening events, psychedelic pop crooner Connan Mockasin calls in at Soup Kitchen, choral songwriter James Vincent McMorrow tugs on the heart strings amid the lofty scenery of Manchester Cathedral and local reggae collective Extra Love gather at Band on the Wall. Later on, there’s a second birthday of the week in the shape of Hit&Run at Antwerp Mansion, who’ve picked out Hyperdub signee Joker to mark the occasion, or if you’re closer to the city then head to Gorilla for their club night featuring the indie-band-turned-production-duo Simian Mobile Disco.
Returning to Band on the Wall on Saturday 25th, Craig Charles is in charge of tune selection. The man formerly known as Lister has invited soulsters Hannah Williams and the Tastemakers along to tread the musical boards. Or there’s a debut for the techno and house promoters Bonilla, who’re promising upbeat vibes aplenty at Antwerp Mansion courtesy of Genius of Time, Leif and Matt Pond.
