The enigmatic and inscrutable London producer Ben Khan brings his absorbing blend of nu-soul, funk and pop to Soup Kitchen on 14th April. His 2014 debut EP, ‘1992’, was released to great acclaim; chosen as Pitchfork’s Best New Music and devoured and dissected by Khan’s rapidly snowballing Soundcloud fan base.
His new release, ‘1000’, the title track of which was named ‘Hottest Track’ by Radio 1 last month, confirms Khan’s intriguing talent. It’s slickly produced, compelling and melodic dirty pop, overlain with lingering vocals, cut through with sharp guitar work. A mature, engrossing, vaguely unsettling record that’s also very, very catchy.
