Last week it was announced that Motown legends (and I don’t use that term lightly) Martha Reeves and the Vandellas are returning to Gorilla in September.
The last time they were in Manchester they performed at Gorilla so history is likely to repeat itself with another amazing show. Not everyone knows a Martha Reeves and The Vandellas track by name, but it’s one of those eureka moments when you hear a track like ‘(Love Is Like A) Heatwave’ and you’re like “Oh, THAT’s them!”
Think of them like the edgier, bolder version of The Supremes. Both were on the same label but where The Supremes had innocence with Diana Ross’ soft vocals, Martha Reeves provided an earthier strength to the music.
So for homework, you might want to stream some Motown classics to get you in the mood. Make sure you check out ‘Dancing In The Street’ and ‘Nowhere To Run’- two more fine examples of Martha and the girls’ classics that should tempt you to book your ticket for the show.
