With Lana Del Rey’s breakthrough a distant memory and the foundations of pop music history long since established by the likes of Blondie and Eurythmics’ floor-fillers, we’re on the lookout for the next female-fronted electronic indie bands to take a seat at the genre’s top table.

Over the next couple of weeks, we’re being treated to the best in a new wave of girl power, with MØ and Poliça both heading to Manchester’s Ritz venue this October.

Both can boast a recording credits list as long as the average synth chord since emerging in the early 2010s, so their melodic stars have been rising. The only questions is: how high in the sky is the limit?

Danish sensation MØ (pronounced ‘moo’ or ‘mu’) may only have one LP to her name, 2014’s No Mythologies To Follow, but has been busy across the pop music world since gaining wider recognition in 2012. She features on 14 singles – both her own work and guesting on tracks with artists from Major Lazer to Iggy Azalea – and the snippets from her sophomore album, Kamikaze, suggest it’ll be worth the wait.

Poliça, fronted by central figure Channy Leaneagh, arguably command a wider musical palette, not only in light of their focus towards LPs rather than singles. Their adventures in the electronic edges of alt-rock have attracted fans in the shape of Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, while the Minneapolis outfit’s 2016 album, United Crushers, has seen plaudits from the Guardian (4/5), the NME (“they’ve excelled themselves with the most intimate and empowering album of their career”) and Drowned In Sound (7/10 – “this record sparkles and whirrs in a way that is very easy to fall in love with”).

We also live in hope that they’ll add extra letters to the standard UK keyboard, so it’s quicker and easier to type their names accurately, but with Brexit conditions looming, that may be wishful thinking. So in defiance of political introversion, go forth and embrace these multilingual typographic creatives.
