With Christmas out the way, we’re ready once again to grind through the business end of winter. Thankfully this month’s BagThing is full of Manchester’s best offerings over the next couple of months to keep us going.

Burn off all those mince pies and Quality Street down at the O2 Ritz as Ultimate Power returns with ‘The World’s Greatest Club Night‘ on January 20th for their monthly celebration of all things Power Ballad. Other upcoming club nights include Antics’ Daft Punk Special at Night & Day and Juicy over at The Deaf Institute.

If you’re looking for a more restful night out, fans of acoustic singer-songwriters will be pleased to hear King Creosote will be visiting the Royal Northern College of Music on Monday 16th January, supported by the up-and-coming Charlie Cunningham.

Stay Fresh Fest is back for a second helping this month at The Deaf Institute. Running from 4pm on Saturday 28th January, bands include Mums, Henge, Luxury Death and Strobes. Staying at The Deaf Institute, we’re also looking forward to shows by Elisa and Man & The Echo on Sunday 19th and Friday 24th February respectively, along with Erol Alkan and Menance Beach in the coming weeks. Lee Fields & The Expressions, The Hotelier and Trentemoller will be stopping off at fellow Trof venue Gorilla this month, where film fans are also in for a treat with screenings of Predator and Groundhog Day (twice!).

One of January’s highlights comes courtesy of DHP, as Oklahoma’s experimental psych-rockers The Flaming Lips visit the Academy on Sunday 22nd January. Hey! Manchester’s winter line-up includes The Rural Alberta Advantage (+ Playacting) on Monday 23rd January, Half Waif on Tuesday 24th January and Andy Shauf (+ Tasseomancy) on Thursday 9th February.

Finally, yes, we’re already keeping one eye on the festival season with Fat Out Fest 2017. Read our preview here. More details on these events and other great quality shows in Manchester in the coming months can be found in a BagThing near you.
