Words by Wes Foster
Returning to Manchester yet again in the first date of an European tour (directly after touring the US) Seattle based producer Sango brings an eclectic mix of laid back rhythms and trip hop, an all encompassing sound that is fresh and exciting taking cues from many different genres and styles. This half-removed style which seems to have slight distance from the music itself creates something close to an aesthetic in sound, the distance allows for a space created in the music, making it both exhilarating and relaxed at the same time, depending on how you want to invest yourself.
Live this translates incredibly well, and he has an ability to hold an audience that seems to come with ease with well worked out sets that are more than tried and tested, selling out dates in the US, with a devoted, if smaller following, due to a smaller profile this side of the Atlantic. Whilst the music can be both exhilarating and relaxing, live it certainly sits on the more exhilarating side. The audience is a participant in the most absolute terms, disallowed from not participating and paying attention. If you can catch him on this or the next tour, make sure you do – Sango is one of the most refined yet freeing producers around.
Sango played at Gorilla on Wednesday 22nd February, 2017.
