Who really wants a candlelit dinner for two when Nordic indie rockers Sløtface and Fufanu are set to play Manchester this Valentine’s week? Supported by three budding Mancunian outfits, we’re looking forward to two days of thundering, energetic and melodic alternative rock.

Sløtface are a band taking big strides when you consider they’re yet to release a long play record. Their last EP, Empire Records, was released back in November, supported with a show at the Fallow Cafe. Fast forward just three months and the joyous, energetic and addictive pop-punk quartet are back in Manchester and are expected to release their debut album this Spring, following two EPs and eight singles. They are a band passionate in their vocal support for feminism, gender equality and environmentalism. This fiery political activism saw them arrested, fined and banned from Norway’s Førde Fjord whilst filming the music video for last year’s Sponge State.

They’ll be playing The Castle Hotel on Monday 13th supported by Mancunian trio Blooms and quartet La Mode, both already familiar with the Manchester circuit having played packed shows at the Deaf Institute, Night & Day and Matt & Phreds since forming.

That brings us to the big day, where Icelandic rockers Fufanu are Gullivers-bound. Made up of Kaktus and Guðlaugur Einarsson – not related – the duo seem to be “Iceland’s most exciting young band” as their brand of alternative post-punk, – a self-described “rock’n’roll soundscape” – has quickly gained them a large following around Europe. Rolling Stone penned them as one of 2014’s artists you need to know, a statement supported with the release of their debut LP Few More Days To Go the following year. This month sees their sophomore effort hit the shelves in the shape of Sports, aptly titled with such driven, energetic and powerful songs. Hear the album’s leading track below.

Special guests are Manchester very own Pines (read our preview on them here), another act who have wasted no time in putting their foot down on the local scene, as they’ve just released their latest music video.

A superb way to spend Valentine’s Day, if you ask us.
