Our city centre is blessed with an array of superb venues, so it’s often easy to overlook shows in neighbouring Salford. Overlook you shouldn’t though, as we’re looking forward to some exciting shows at The Eagle Inn and Sacred Trinity Church. The Eagle Inn has proved to be a solid stepping stone for many acts during early forays on the live circuit, whilst the stunning Sacred Trinity Church has hosted an eclectic range of major talent over recent years. Here are a few of our picks to keep your eyes and ears on this May.
Sivu has recently unveiled ‘Childhood House’, and introduction to a forthcoming second album. You may know his music though that video filmed in a MRI scanner, but there’s certainly more to him than a viral video. With a little help from Alt-J producer Charlie Andrew, Sivu’s releases are haunting, melodious pop songs brought together under Sivu’s unique falsetto vocals.
American blues/rock singer-songwriter Diane Birch has released two critically acclaimed albums in the shape of ‘Bible Belt’ and ‘Speak A Little Louder’. Her latest work, the finely crafted EP ‘Nous‘ was written and recorded mostly in Berlin, and self-released on Bandcamp and picks up where those albums left off.
Ahead of a debut album hitting the shelves sometime this year, the promising new talent of Miya Folick will be heading to to England for a debut appearance in Manchester. The LA-based singer-songwriter hasn’t wasted time in carving out her place in the indie underground and is now heading out on a short European tour with a debut appearance in Manchester.
Folick’s folk-pop/alt-rock output has consisted of various singles, which were bundled up in the EP ‘Strange Darling‘ back in 2013. Since then she’s been refining her sound which ranges from low-key sparse arrangements to energetic thumping ballads, one culmination of which has surfaced in the shape of the single ‘God Is A Woman’. Her date at The Eagle Inn comes just a few short days before returning to the city for 2017’s Dot To Dot Festival.
Having just released album ‘Warriors‘, folk-pop favourite Lisa Mitchell is out on a short tour of the UK and Ireland. The singer-songwriter has proven to be something of a hit in her native Australia, already achieving top ten status with previous albums ‘Wonder’ and ‘Bless This Mess’. Her mix of understated electronica and delicate vocals offer dreamy, escapist songs based on her own life experiences.
