Performance and literary variety show Pen:Chant are set for their latest neo-cabaret night, tapping into Manchester’s reserves of spoken word, comedy, live music, contemporary performance and everything in between. Taking over HOME’s studio theatre for two consecutive nights on 24th and 25th November, Pen:Chant will deliver a politically-charged double bill of performance and music, as part of HOME’s A Revolution Betrayed? – a major new season of theatre, visual art and film inspired by the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution.
Under the watchful eyes of the freshly-erected Friedrich Engels and hosted by award-winning writer and performer Ben Mellor, the two nights are headlined by writer, performer and Russian revolutionary poetry expert, the internationally acclaimed Rosy Carrick. Based in Brighton, the quick-witted and charismatic spoken word artist has PhD on the Russian revolutionary poet Vladimir Mayakovsky, and has released two books of his work in translation.
Joining Carrick on the 24th will be the racy and political taboo-busting tunes from Jerusalem-born multicultural multi-instrumentalist Avital Raz. Her latest release ‘The Believer’, a collaboration with Scotland based cellist/producer Pete Harvey, was reviewed in The Herald Scotland as ‘likely to be one of the most compelling things you hear all year’
Returning to HOME on the 25th, Rosy will be joined by record-breaking beatboxer, poet, rapper and producer Testament. Joining the dots between rap, song and spoken word, the acclaimed artist has performed on BBC Radio 1Xtra, 6music and MTV and collaborated with luminaries including Corinne Bailey Rae, Soweto Kinch and DJ KoolHerc. Testament is currently touring his new one man show about rap music, sexism and fatherhood entitled ‘WOKE’.
Both events feature Pen:Chant’s open mic slots, available to local artists of all disciplines and will be sound tracked by the superb English Disco Lovers, a pro-equality DJ collective reclaiming the EDL acronym for positive use.
Pen:Chant Protest & Revolution special takes place at HOME on the Friday 24th and Saturday 25th November 2017. Tickets are available here.
