With all eyes on the city this week for the Manchester Derby it was always going to be an interesting few days, but we won’t milk the events of the weekend too much… We’re just looking forward to another seven days brimming with great shows and festive treats, so read on for our picks of the week’s events. We’re also sure you’ll want to head down to Salford Quays this week to catch Lightwaves 2017, which began on Friday.
Monday 11th: The Cribs (Gorilla)
// We kick off the week with indie royalty The Cribs, who are polishing off their four-night Cribsmas residency at Gorilla, and we expect the band to pull out all the stops tonight.
Tuesday 12th: Gogol Bordello (Academy)
// Manhattan gypsy punk band and prolific tourers Gogol Bordello visit the city with new LP ‘Seekers and Finders’ under their belts.
// Manchester’s 24-hour party people the Happy Mondays are back on the road on the eve of the 30th anniversary of their 1987 ‘Squirrel And G-Man…’ announced a twenty-five date tour of the UK and Ireland in the run up to Christmas. Read our full preview here. Over at The Albert Hall, Swedish rapper and singer-songwriter Yung Lean will be out supporting new record ‘Stranger’.
// Gorilla host another residency! Now enjoying a fourth decade of deafening noise and fuzz, influential trio Dinosaur Jr. are hitting the road once more, and we are blessed with three intimate shows at Gorilla on 14th, 16th and 17th (read on to hear what they’ll be up to on the 15th…) Read our full preview here. Up and coming indie singer-songwriter and rapper King Krule stops off at Academy 2
// Dust off your wigs, leather jackets and platform shoes – Ultimate Power are throwing a Christmas special. Join them for a power ballad extravaganza celebrating all things Jovi, Meatloaf and Tyler. As Dinosaur Jr. have a day off from their three-night residency at Gorilla, J Mascis and friends will be performing a special intimate show at (150 capacity) Gullivers, playing songs from the first two Stooges albums.
// Revered rock and roll star Liam Gallagher returns home for a sell out appearance the Manchester Arena. Perhaps more known these days for tweets over tracks, reviews for his current shows have been heaping praise on Gallagher. Elsewhere, Dinosaur Jr. are back at Gorilla and Newton-Le-Willows four-piece The K’s play their biggest Manchester show to date at Deaf.
// We end the week with Belgian electro-rock outfit Soulwax, out on tour supporting eighth studio album ‘From Deewee’, recorded live with the band capturing songs all together in one take. Back over at Gorilla, Dinosaur Jr. bring their residency to a close with one final blow out.
