International Women’s Day falls on March 8th, a global day celebrating women’s achievements and a calling for gender equality. With a variety of events, performances and exhibitions taking place, let us guide you on when and where to celebrate International Women’s Day in Manchester!

The Refuge celebrates International Women’s Day with ‘Suffragette City: Portraits of Women in Manchester Music‘, an exclusive exhibition recognising women’s greatest achievements in the music industry. Curated by Manchester Digital Music Archive co-founder Alison Surtees, the exhibition showcases women from the music industry and their influence, featuring portraits of 25 key women in Greater Manchester music scene who are venue owners, sound engineers, record label managers, DJs, musicians and performers. Running from February 23rd, closing night on March 10th will see a collection of female DJs will play from 3pm until late. There is a minimum donation of £2 on the door, with every penny split between the national charity Women’s Aid and Manchester Digital Music Archive.

Literary variety show Pen:Chant team up with Gorilla to bring you ‘SHE PWR’, an inclusive space that welcomes humans of all genders, ethnicities, sexualities and identities. To celebrate International Women’s Day, the event will host a talk with prominent female creatives and entrepreneurs, a maker’s market, an art exhibition, live music and DJs, canapés and glitter station. The night will end with a special show guest hosted by alt-cabaret live wires Eggs Collective.
Throughout the evening there will be a fund raising for WAST (Women Asylum Seekers Together).

Elsewhere, Living Room Dance Club host a special DJ party for International Women’s Day special at Common, and Deaf Institute bring you Femonade Fundraising Exhibition, where six young, female artists showcase their work exploring themes of womanhood, fundraising for Breast Cancer Haven. Just off Canal Street, The Molly House have put together a day of festivities, including a special beer kindly donated by Manchester’s Outstanding Brewery, all raising money local women’s charities.
