Summer is always a busy time on the musical calendar, with frequent visits from international artists making their way between festivals or just out on the road themselves. Looking towards Grosvenor Street venue Deaf Institute, here are five picks we think you’ll enjoy over the coming months at one of Manchester’s finest venues.
C.W. Stoneking // 26th June
Aussie songsmith C.W. Stoneking has been channelling a bygone era of blues rock for the past two decades, returning to the road last year for a string of intimate solo performances. His current tour sees the “jungle blues” singer-songwriter play an extensive series of dates in the UK and the Netherlands, before heading to the US and his native Australia.
Start To End – Jeff Buckley’s Grace // 5th July
Formed from a core group of some of Scotland’s leading young musicians, Start To End perform their favourite albums in full, yes, from start to end. Gracing Deaf’s stage, the band will be returning to Jeff Buckley’s much-loved 1994 classic debut ‘Grace’, which they previously performed across Scotland in Summer 2017. Fans will not want to miss this group of extremely talented musicians capture the excitement and feel of the late singer-songwriter’s magnum opus.
LIINES // 21st July
Powerful post-punk trio LIINES are no strangers to the city, and saw their last show in town quickly upgraded from Gullivers to the higher capacity Night People due to incredible demand for tickets. Most accurately described by The Quietus as “tight-as-you-like snarly pop coated in a holy racket of guitar noise“, the local three-piece are still without a major release tucked under their belt, but have found a devoted following with three hotly-received singles, including latest track ‘Disappear’.
Hiss Golden Messenger // 27th August
Hailing from North Carolina and led by singer-songwriter MC Taylor, Hiss Golden Messenger has carved out his own role within country rock, adding a fresh take on the genre with bittersweet, soulful arrangements. Last year saw the release of his ninth studio album ‘Hallelujah Anyhow’, met with wide acclaim and supported with an extensive touring schedule.
Youngblood Brass Band // 13th September
Collective horn blowers Youngblood Brass Band will return to the city once more possessing a signature New Orleans sound and strong punk ethos. The riot jazz/hip-hop ensemble have been thrilling audiences since 1998, now celebrating their 20th anniversary with latest album ’20 Years Young’.
