“I feel like in the past I hadn’t fully got my solo sea legs,” Kevin Morby self deprecatingly proclaimed on the press rounds for his third album ‘Singing Saw‘. Well now he’s an old sea dog with a backing band of accomplished players that are his trusty crew. The former Woods bassist (and co-founder of The Babies) latest album ‘City Music‘ stokes the embers of ‘Singing Saw’ and relights the fire on the dusky atmosphere his previous album captured. His latest effort however is just that little bit better crafted and immediate than his previous works. The album’s title track ‘City Music’ finds Morby in fine form, a self described “Velvet’s jam” built around a single riff for seven sensational minutes. His band lock into a groove while Morby peppers it with a scintillating guitar arpeggio and simplistic yet effective lyrics.

He encapsulates what is the beating heart of any truly great city truly with recent release ‘City Music’, it’s musical heritage and the romance and nostalgia it evokes in you when you listen to a song inspired by a city. Every truly great city has a rich musical heritage and this is Morby’s homage to his former home New York. Catch him in the flesh when he plays in the intimate surroundings of Gorilla.
