Words by Tom Frodsham
It’s pretty fair to say that the UK charts right now are saturated with female singer/songwriters. Jess Glynne, Ella Eyre, Birdy etc., etc.…. But Rae Morris is an underrated member of that club who’s had a successful year following the release of her Top 10 debut album ‘Unguarded’ back in January. And now she’s going to be performing in Manchester on 10th October at The Ritz.
Morris is a fellow Northerner from Blackpool who’s been a notable support act for artists like Bombay Bicycle Club and Tom Odell before finally bringing out her own material. Her album was produced primarily by Ariel Rechtshaid- the Grammy winning producer who’s responsible for the work of a pick and mix of artists like Charli XCX, We Are Scientists and Brandon Flowers. He brings a pop sensibility to Morris’s ethereal songwriting style.
If you’re not familiar, think of Morris’ sound like that of a young Kate Bush. Especially on the single ‘Under The Shadows’ – the galloping beat throughout sounds a lot like Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’. I was lucky enough to see Morris at this year’s Field Day Festival back in June; she was a definite standout of the day’s offerings and gave a memorable performance. Since then her album has gone onto be one of my favourites of the year so far.
If you’re a bit sick of the Gouldings and Swifts out there, and want a less obvious pop sound then check out Morris’ work. Especially tracks ‘Love Again’, ‘Closer’ and ‘Do You Even Know?’. You’ll have plenty of time to love the material just in time for when she’s at The Ritz in a few short days!
Rae Morris performs at The Ritz on Saturday 10th October. You can buy tickets HERE.
