Not shy of recording and releasing extravagant concept albums on a prolific schedule, the Manchester psychedelian supergroup Desmadrados Soldados De Ventura’s latest effort has squeezed onto a mere four sides of wax.
Titled The Grand Celestial Purge, the three-hour record is due to launch at Soup Kitchen on Wednesday 5 October, and the band have leaked a sneak preview of the first track, ‘Defixiones’, which weighs in at just under 22 and a half minutes of swirling electric strings, ambient feedback and fast-fingered frolics.
Channelling the great jam bands of the 60s and 70s, its central concept is to counteract and ward off the year of rock’n’roll death that 2016 has so far proven to be; lives eternalised through recorded music yet taken from the physical plain. Bring on 2017, they say, with guitars blazing and amps pointing to the great gig in the sky.
Even the most ardent atheist may struggle not to get spiritual while listening to the album, whose release date on 25 September precedes the launch gig, while a pilgrimage to the gig itself could only lead to musical transcendence.
Desmadrados Soldados De Ventura play at Soup Kitchen on Wednesday 5 October, 2016.
The Grand Celestial Purge will be released via Golden Lab Records on Sunday 25 September, 2016.
