It was Spring 2015 when Manchester last felt the almighty rumble of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, playing then to an awestruck crowd at a packed out Albert Hall. This Halloween, the Canadian doom outfit return to our city, taking their mammoth, symphonic productions to Victoria Warehouse for the latest instalment of the alt-rock festival Transformer.
The ever-evolving collective came into being in Montreal, in the early 90s when original members began playing locals shows and self-releasing their own material. Debut album ‘F♯ A♯ ∞‘ landed in 1997, now famous for bringing ‘East Hastings’ into the world, used in that sequence of apocalyptic horror 28 Days Later.
When it comes to their live shows, music is just one part of the puzzle that goes towards their five-star rituals. The band run a four-projector 16mm projection of films and loops throughout their shows, adding to their enigma. No doubt, their dedicated cult following will be packing out Victoria Warehouse this Halloween. They will be joined by Liars, Omar Souleyman, Ben Frost and many more at the Victoria Warehouse on 28th October. Read our full preview here.
